Kinja'd!!!

I bought this stereo ages ago at the Goodwill Outlet and just stumbled across it in the basement. I thought that if I figured out the pinout I could make it work.

Sure enough, all of the info I needed was right on the board - easy peasy. Then I looked at the amplifier chip:

Problem identified. Game over. At least it only set me back about 50 cents. Oh well...

I’m sure it could be replaced if you had the tools and time... but for the value? Probably not worth it.

And, naturally, something ELSE could have been shorted to send it into over-current.

There is one for sale on Amazon right now for $19. I’m sure it could be fixed, but for that price....why?

I do have the time, tools and experience to fix it. I also have a tiny little board with remote control that does exactly the same thing. Yeah, given the possibility of other problems   it’s not worth screwing with, but hopefully I can scavenge a few parts before it heads for recycling. The poor application of the thermal compound on the back of that chip as well as the fact that it wasn’t tightly secured to the chassis leads me to believe that it was just a cooling issue, but given the value of it I’m not going to bother spending any more time on it.

Precisely.

They’ll have the same unit in stock in about a month for less than $13. If I did buy one I would verify the heat sink, but since I don’t need it and already have another device that does the same thing I’ll just recycle this thing.

It’s ded.

On totally non-related electronics note, I happened upon some pics of one of the types of radio transmitters I used to work on. This is the largest being 40kW. The final amp tube ran with 12 kV plate voltage and 300A filament current. They made good space heaters when things were chilly.
